The ALLROAD is the first self-propelled chipper in the world that can also be equipped with CATERPILLAR motorisation. In more detail, this is a CAT engine, 6 cylinders, 18 litres, 597 kW, 800 Hp, which complies with the ‘STAGE V’ anti-pollution regulations and does not require AdBlue additive. An engine that is particularly appreciated not only for its generous size, but also for the capillarity of the technical service network on a global scale.
The ALL ROAD can be equipped with a turbocharged VOLVO PENTA TWD 1683, stage V, 6 cylinders, 16-litre engine with 796 hp using EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and Ad-Blue systems. This is the most powerful engine in VOLVO range for versatile industrial use: it can easily go from 0 to 1,600 rpm during chipping and then from 0 to 2,300 rpm on the road.
Key Features
The ALLROAD lifting and adjustable cab assures the operator a position of absolute control: during work, it is positioned high up, noticeably offset from the shape of the machine, in order to allow an excellent visibility on the feeding chain. Fully glazed and air-conditioned, the cab has a state-of-the-art console, futuristic and intuitive, for the complete control and management of the machine, while moving and chipping.
The Palfinger Epsilon forestry crane, equipped with a 10,1 m long arm, is mounted at the centre of the chipper. This strategic position favours the best load distribution, both during transport and in working phase, avoiding excessive strain on the vehicle chassis, keeping the geometry compact and optimising the centre of gravity to make the transit on steeply sloping soils easier and safer.
The ALLROAD mobility is ensured by the 4-wheel drive (NOKIAN 650-65 R38), all steering, with three possible steering modes: with both axles individually, together, or with the front axle only. The 4-wheel drive position and size, the design of the chassis and the position of the crane have been carefully designed to assure a machinery distance from the ground of 55 cm, while maintaining an exceptionally low centre of gravity, a valuable feature to ensure stability when moving over uneven soil or steep slopes.
The Pezzolato closed drum, well known for its reliability and maintenance-free durability, guarantees the production of quality wood chips either small and large size. The drum is 1400 mm wide and has staggered sections to better distribute the machine strain, reducing vibration, noise and consumption. According to the customer’s needs, the material to be processed and the typology of chips to be produced, it is possible to equip the ALLROAD with the following drums: Evolution and Heavy Duty, this last one with a double configuration: “single cut” (No. 6 knives et No. 6 cover blocks for No. 1 cut each rotation) in order to produce big size chips and “double cut” (No. 12 knives for No. 2 cuts each rotation) for middle & small size chips.
The cut group by Pezzolato, with its well-known performance, has been designed to improve the life of the wear components. It mainly consists of: an under-knife fixed with screws to the rotor, a knife with slots and a multi-stud press-knife for an easy clamping (only 420 Nm required).
The counter-knife consists of 6 independent elements so that worn or damaged segments can be worked on singularly if necessary, saving on maintenance costs. Under-knives and counter-knives can be supplied with tungsten carbide elements for a greater wear resistance.
Inside the cab there are two touch-screen panels, 12.1’‘ and 7’’ respectively. Thanks to these panels the operator can check the shooting of the four available cameras, manage the machine on the road and control the working parameters during the chipping phase.
The counter-knife is mounted on a support, fixed to a hydraulic cylinder and connected to a nitrogen-filled lung. Should metal parts, stones, concrete … enter the machine, the lung discharges immediately, causing the opening of the counter-knife and giving space to the foreign body; simultaneously with the opening of the counter-knife, the feeding direction is reversed, thus reducing the damages to the machine.
Every chipper element or section that requires regular maintenance or inspection, such as the cutting unit, the screening grid or the chipping ejection system, is positioned in such a way as to ensure simple, easy and direct access for the operator, in order to facilitate the operations and reduce the intervention times.
The hydraulic ejection system can rotate 270°, thus allowing the wood chips to be discharged even into containers or heaps positioned in front of the cabin, to its side or behind the engine. The hydraulically driven fan with continuous variable speed allows the fan speed to be adjusted to the actual need, reducing the energy consumption and the production of too fine dust and chips. The speed, set by the operator, is kept constant by the system, although the engine speed can vary.
The fan of the ALLROAD is equipped with a hydraulic opening system that allows the access to the heart of the system simply with a click for easy cleaning and maintenance. The wear parts of the fan and of the conveyor are made of wear resistant plates consisting of a steel base and hydrocarbon inserts (CDP).
The ALLROAD tool storage compartment is equipped with the necessary tools for routine machine maintenance, as well as the operator’s tools, thanks to its generous capacity. It is positioned for easy and convenient access, and its airtight closure ensures safety during movement.
